Don’t trap them at home. Build public toilets.
Public toilets are essential for the health, wellbeing, and dignity of our communities.
They are a basic need that we should all be able to access. Unfortunately, public toilet provision in the UK has been declining for decades, with many local authorities closing toilets in the face of cost pressures.
This decline in public toilet provision has a significant impact on vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, people with medical conditions and disabilities. Without access to public toilets, these groups may be forced to stay at home, or limit their time outside, which can have a negative impact on their health and wellbeing.
But public toilets are not just important for vulnerable groups. They are essential for the comfort and convenience of all members of the community. Whether you’re out shopping, running errands, or just enjoying a day out, knowing there are public toilets available can radically improve your experience.
That's why we need an urgent drive to build more public toilets and keep the few we have left open.
We need to ensure that everyone in our communities has access to clean, safe, and accessible public toilets whenever they need them. This is not a matter of convenience or comfort, but of basic human dignity and social inclusion.
Let’s work together to ensure that public toilet provision in the UK meets the needs of all members of our communities. Let’s demand more funding and better standards for public toilets, and hold local authorities accountable for ensuring that public toilets are available and accessible to all.
